Lyrics

There’s an old man standing outside the Bridge Street Bar tonight
He’s listening to the music from inside alone
The owner sees him there, brings a drink, and says, “Come in, set a spell”
He knows he’s got no place to go

In the bar, the music’s loud and the bar room’s packed
It’s a weekend crowd
The band is good but it’s got no soul
The old man sits there drinking; some stare
He knows what they’re thinking
But it was so different long ago

When he played that blues guitar, people came from near and far
Some said he was possessed
Some said he was a child of the risen sun
And every note he used to play sang love and sorrow, hope and pain
They used to scream his name but now his fame only reigns among the forgotten ones

The hardcore crowd still lingers as the sound of the last song fades
The bar owner walks up to the band real slow
He talks to the lead guitarist, who turns and looks to the back of the bar
He says, “Oh yeah, if he wants to, let him roll”

The owner walks on back and after several minutes of a one-way chat
The old man nods and he heads to the stage
He sits down on a beer-stained chair
Hunches over the guitar there
Picks it up and slowly starts to play

He played that blues guitar, though his hands were old and scarred
Every note he played sang love, hope, pain and sorrow; sweet and low
The owner smiled; he understood
The crowd went wild as he knew they would
The old man, he played for hours and not a person turned to go

When he played that blues guitar
They used to come from near and far
They said he was either possessed or he was a child of the risen sun
Now he’ll do this one last show; an old man in his ragged clothes
Tonight, they’ll scream his name; but come the morn it fades back among the forgotten ones
