Lyrics

Ray was a spider of merit, a web spinner grand so they say
Entrapping all flies that were happening by was a trivial matter for Ray
But Ray was a little near sighted, you might say his vision was poor
Frankly stating the facts, Ray was blind as a bat! Oh, yeah, Ray needed glasses for sure

Ray was also a little too cocky, always bragging how he was the tops
His friends were aware that Ray spun a fine snare but they wished all the bragging would stop
Now one day when a hummingbird passed him, Ray mistakenly saw a huge fly
"When I catch that," he claimed. "Oh, the fortune and fame !! My legend will rise to the sky !!"

So all day and all night he constructed a web of incredible size
Checking and testing his greatest of nestings, awaiting this largest of flies
When morning arrived, Ray was ready for that wonderful humming of wings
With flowers as bait, he could just sit and wait, and soon his trap it would spring

Then all of a sudden it happened the hummingbird stuck in his twine
Furiously flapping to escape the entrapping, meanwhile ol' Ray biding time
Slowly Ray inched his way forward while his web bounded madly about
This giant of flies was indeed a great prize if he'd only quit trying to get out

Now maybe ol’ Ray is the greatest but a hummingbird isn't a fly
Ray's ego had blinded him worse than his eyes and, the truth is, he shouldn't have tried
So soon the ordeal reached an ending and the victor had finally been crowned
Somewhere off in the breeze the hummingbird flees while Ray plummets down to the ground

Poor Ray his pride had been shattered and he sobbed as he fell from his lair
He stuck with a thud in a puddle of mud trapped like the flies in his snare
But the spiders couldn't let him remain there, for all of his faults, they were friends
So, they took him away from the mud were he lay on a stretcher to where he could mend

Now off in a room to recover sits Ray all alone with his pride
No legends, no glory, no newspaper stories - in fact he's afraid of all flies !!
But one good thing that finally happened, Ray got the proper eye care
And he's still a great spinner but not for his dinner, now he makes silk underwear !!
